The Yogi's Journey
Pranayama is the fourth step in Patanjali's Ashta-anga yoga system. Pranayama is composed of prana ( life force) and ayama (extension). Pranayama is the main practice yogis use to rejuvenate their body and control the mind. This preparation is a must, before he or she can hope to master the more advance spiritual practices. The practice of asana without pranayama is not very effective and the benefits will be quite insignificant. The preliminary practices of pranayama are done for the purpose to purify the body and concentrate the mind. Once the practitioner reaches a good level of physical and mental balance, he or she can use pranayama effectively to awaken and become aware of the Kundalini Shakti (serpent power). This energy resides in a dormant state at the base of the spine. Hatha yoga combines different asanas with special breathing techniques to direct this energy into the central spinal channel (sushumna nadi). This must be done before Kundalini can begin its ascension through the different spinal plexus (chakras) to the top of the head (crown chakra).
